This is part 1 in a series of detailed articles about setting up a brand new domain on Australian hosting provider Zuver. See here for an overview of the whole series.
When registering a domain name you need to consider whether you want a .com, .com.au or other type of address. My recommendation is for an Australian business operation in Australia then you want to register the business name with a .com.au address. If you are setting up a domain for a business doing global work or for your own personal name brand (sometimes called a vanity URL) then .com is your best option.
On to the details…
First head on over to Zuver. For most small companies the $3/mo (current at time of writing) is more than enough. Click on the “Lets get started” button on the Zuver website.
On the following page you will be shown a $6/mo offer and the $3/mo offer again. This time click on the “Add to cart” button under the $3/mo offer.
Now we start the fun part. You need to select your domain name and check if it’s available. Note here you need to use the drop down to select whether you want .com or .com.au (or possibly another option). Enter the name you want to register and click on Check.
If all has gone well you will see a confirmation that the domain is available and an option to select the number of years to register for. You will also be shown a number of other domain endings that you may like to register at the same time. I recommend leaving everything alone and clicking on the “Continue” button at the bottom of the page.
If the name is not available then you will need to try a different name or ending.
The next page will let you select the billing cycle for the hosting. You can select monthly, yearly or more. Click “Continue” to proceed.
On the next page you review the domain name and if you have selected a .com domain then you will be presented an option for ID Protection. This will hide your personal details when people search for details about the domain. I recommend enabling this option if it’s available. Note that .com.au domains are not able to enable this option. When you are ready click on “Continue”
Next you will be shown a summary of your order. Make sure everything is correct, especially the domain name because you can’t change it after this. When ready click on the “Checkout” button.
Now you will need to enter your personal details and payment information. Note that you will need to make sure that the email address you enter is one you can access.
At the bottom of the page you will need to confirm that you’ve read the Terms of Service and click the “Complete Order” button.
One last step is to confirm the email address used to register the domain. Shortly after completing your order you will receive an email with a subject like “Domain name Registrant contact data verification”. Open this email and click on the confirmation link.
Congratulations! You have now registered your own domain and purchased hosting. That wasn’t too painful was it?
The next step in the series is to setup your new email address!
